100 Gender Creative Playgroups
We need your help to reach our goal of 100 Gender Creative Playgroups around the globe!
Gender Creative Playgroups are informal events where families come together to celebrate children’s diversity in an inclusive setting. The Playgroups are spaces where kids and grown ups can be themselves and make new friends. We encourage hosts to make the events free of gender segregation, stereotypes, and peanuts (cause you know, allergic reactions aren’t super fun). We’re happy you want to get involved and we want to support you, so here’s our recipe for community building!
1. Decide on a day, time, and location for the playgroup!
We recommend Saturday or Sunday.
Two-hour time blocks in the morning or afternoon work well (avoid prime nap time!).
We suggest public spaces like a park or library so you can comfortably invite people you don’t know.
2. Make sure the event is free for attendees!
Public parks and libraries are free venues, or you can ask local organizations to co-sponsor the event to make it free (LGBTQIA2 resource centers, children’s museums, etc.)
All we ask is that the playgroup doesn’t cost guests money. If you want to purchase refreshments or pay for an activity (face painter, balloon artist), that is up to you, but certainly not required. You have done enough by organizing the space and promoting the event.
3. Download the Gender Creative Playgroup image for social media promotion.
4. Post your event online.
Share your event on Instagram /Twitter/your blog, with the date, time, and location.
Create a Facebook event or start a Facebook Group.
Use the hashtag #GenderCreativePlaygroup and #GenderCreativePlaygroup[city name] for example, #GenderCreativePlaygroupPortland
Tag @drkylmyers and @raisingzoomer and other inclusive organizations in your community on Instagram and ask them to share it with their followers and advertise on their own social media or newsletters.
5. Send an email to hello@kylmyers.com with the details of your playgroup so we can help you promote it and build community in your hometown.
6. If you feel so inclined, take pictures at your playgroup (with the permission of your guests), use #GenderCreativePlaygroup and send us a message about how it went!
Have fun!

During my research for the Sasha and Storm post, I came across an article about Storm and something written in it jumped out at me: Rolling out of the “media hoopla” that followed the Star story - people would yell “boy” or “girl” at Storm...
